Granger House & The Perch
constructed: 1941, 1950
Address: 805 W 16th Street
The two buildings on the property reflect distinct architectural periods: the pre-war International Style seen in the garage apartment known as the Perch (designed in 1938, built mid-1940s), and the post-war Midcentury Modern Ranch Style of the main house (built in 1951), both designed by architect Charles T. Granger Jr. Granger, a UT-trained architect and partner in the prominent Fehr & Granger firm, originally built the Perch for his young family on land gifted by his parents, and later constructed the house for his growing household. Louise and William Denham owned the property from 1963 to 1998, maintaining its original condition. The earlier home on the lot, where D.H. Hart Jr. lived from 1929–1937, was moved to South Austin before the Granger structures were built.
