Brady House
Constructed: 1910
Address: 1601 Pearl Street
Judge John W. Brady, a prominent Austin attorney and public official, built this house in 1916 after selling a larger residence nearby. A former county attorney, assistant attorney general, and justice on the 3rd Court of Civil Appeals, Brady was influential in the breakup of Standard Oil’s Texas monopoly and worked under Governor “Ma” Ferguson. In 1929, he was convicted of murdering Lehlia Highsmith and served a brief prison sentence. Later, the house was owned by artists from Imagine, Inc., including choreographer Dee McCandless, and had previously housed the Butler family for over two decades.
