JW & Cornelia Rice Scarbrough House
Constructed: 1919
Address: 1801 West Avenue
The property was originally purchased by Louis Horst in 1847 and eventually sold to the Scarbrough family in 1916. Architect Edwin C. Kreisle designed the Italian Renaissance Revival home for John William Scarbrough, son of the founder of Scarbrough & Sons, featuring slate roofing, arched windows, and ornate ironwork by Weigle Ironworks. John and his wife Cornelia, daughter of Galveston’s Edwin Eldridge Rice, lived here for over 50 years, hosting notable guests including Texas governors and civic leaders. Before the Scarbrough House was built, the site was home to C.W. Firebaugh of Firebaugh & Company hardware.
