Caswell House
Constructed: 1905
Address: 1502 West Avenue
Built circa 1904 by architect A.O. Watson in the Classical Revival style, the Caswell House features rusticated limestone, rounded porticoes with composite columns, a porte cochere, and a complex roofline with gables, dormers, and chimneys. The home was purchased by Louisa Caswell and became the longtime residence of her son William T. Caswell, a Vanderbilt graduate and prominent cotton exporter, businessman, and civic leader who helped develop Austin’s parks and donated to the tennis center that now bears his name. The Caswell family lived in the home at 1502 West Avenue for over 50 years, until 1976. In 1978, Roy A. Bechtol and Corbin J. Robertson Jr. restored the home for office use, preserving original features like stained glass, oak floors, and the original floor plan.
